VILLANOVA, PA. -Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) registered her second straight triple-double as the Seton Hall volleyball team came from behind to defeat Villanova, 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14), on Saturday for its sixth straight victory.
Manthorpe tallied 40 assists, 13 digs and 11 kills for her 25th career triple-double and third this season. Prior to her arrival in South Orange, no Seton hall student-athlete had recorded a single triple-double.
Sophomore Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) notched a match-high 24 digs to go along with six assists in the victory.
The key to Seton Hall's early success has been their offensive depth. Tuesday's match was no different, with six Pirates registered at least eight kills.
In set one, Seton Hall grabbed an early 12-8 lead. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe ensured a 17-13 advantage for the Pirates. The Hall even held a late 22-19, but Villanova scored four of the next five points to tie the score at 23. A Wildcats service error put Seton Hall in set point, but Villanova scored the last three points of the set to take a 1-0 match lead with a 26-24 set one victory.
Fortunately for the Pirates, their set one victory was the last lead of the match for Villanova. The Pirates scored four of the first five points of set two and never looked back. Molly Grammer's (Center Valley, Pa.) kill gave Seton Hall a 23-18 lead. An Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) kill put the Pirates in set point and two sets later another kill by Grammer tied the match at one set apiece as the Pirates won set two, 25-19. Grammer finished with 11 kills for the match.
Seton Hall (12-3, 2-0) led from the start in set three as well. A kill by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave the Pirates a 15-7 lead and they went on to win set three, 25-18. Stacey Manthorpe was the dominant offensive threat for the Pirates in the set. She had six kills and no attack errors in set three alone. Manthorpe went on to register a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs in the match.
The Pirates dominated set four to complete at 3-1 victory. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave Seton Hall a commanding 11-4 early lead. Stacey Manthorpe's (Merion Station, Pa.) kill extended The Hall's lead to 17-6. With the Pirates' leading 22-14, they scored the final three points of the set to win set four, 25-14. Seton Hall dominated set four scoring on a match-high .349 of their attacks, while Villanova hit at only .116.
Seton Hall returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts local rival St. John's at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.25-18.
