
Pirates Open BIG EAST Play With Friars Sweep

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded a rare three-set triple-double as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team opened BIG EAST play with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of Providence on Wednesday.
Manthorpe finished the night with a match-high 28 assists to go with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also had a match-best .529 attack percentage. It is Manthorpe's second triple-double of the season and 24th of her illustrious career.
Providence (4-11, 0-1) began the match ready for their return to BIG EAST play, matching the Pirates point-for-point and eventually taking a 17-14 advantage. Seton Hall responded with three straight points and a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe tied the set at 17. With the set tied at 21, Seton Hall closes the set with four straight points, two of which on kills by Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.). Grammer had a big set for the Pirates. The junior had five kills on eight attacks in the first frame. She went on to collect a match-high 13 for the match.
The Friars never led in set two as Seton Hall established its dominance. With the score tied at three in set two, Seton Hall went on a 6-1 run capped off by an ace from Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) to give the Pirates a 9-4 lead. From there, the lead expanded. Grammer's 11th kill of the night gave the Pirates their largest lead of the set, 23-13. A Providence attack error put Seton Hall in set point and a Shelbey Manthorpe kill gave the Pirates a two-set advantage with a 25-16 set two win.
Seton Hall's offense was masterful in the second set. The Pirates had an attack percentage of .367, while the Friars were only at .031.
Trailing 7-6, Seton Hall scored five straight points and Stacey Manthorpe's kill gave the Pirates an 11-7 advantage. The Hall never looked back. A kill by Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) extended Pirates lead to 21-15. Amanda Hansen's (Pewaukee, Wis.) kill put the Pirates in match point, and Shelbey Manthorpe capped her impressive night with the kill that gave Seton Hall set three, 25-18, and the match, three sets to none. Stacey Manthorpe had five of her eight kills in set three alone as the Pirates had a match-best .387 attack percentage.
Seton Hall (11-3, 1-0) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when it travels to Villanova. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
