SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) nearly recorded a triple-double as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Fordham, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-13), in the Seton Hall Classic on Friday.
Manthorpe finished with a team-high 23 assists to go with eight digs and seven kills. She also registered a team-best .412 attack percentage in the victory.
Despite being winless on the season, Fordham put a scare into Seton Hall in each of the first two sets. The Hall had to rally from three-point deficits mid-way through both frames before finally overtaking the rams. In set one, Seton Hall led 14-13, but Fordham scored four straight to take a 17-14 lead. The Pirates however, responded in kind, going on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 23-18 lead. An ace by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) put Seton Hall in set point, and two points later, a Fordham service error gave set one to The Hall.
Junior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had six of her team-high nine kills in set one as the Pirates established the pace. Hansen also finished with a match-high eight blocks.
In set two, the Pirates were down by the same deficit, 17-14, before kicking their game into high gear. This time, Seton Hall used a 7-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. A sneaky attack by Shelbey Manthorpe put Seton Hall into set point and Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) ended set two with a kill, 25-22.
Fordham scored two of the first three points in set three, but the lead was short-lived. Seton Hall went on an 8-1 run to take a 10-3 lead and never looked back. Two straight blocks by Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave Seton Hall a commanding 19-9 lead and the Pirates rolled to a 25-13 set three victory to complete the sweep. Fordham committed 12 attack errors in set three, contributing mightily to their demise.
Earlier in the day, Dartmouth outlasted Middle Tennessee State in five sets to begin the Seton Hall Classic.
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow as the Seton Hall Classic continues. Seton Hall will face Dartmouth at 11:30 a.m. and Middle Tennessee State at 7:00 p.m.
