NEW YORK, N.Y. - Seton Hall women's golfer Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) and women's tennis player Chloe Sher (Tin Shi Wai, Hong Kong) were named 2013-14 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award recipients on Tuesday.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
An All-BIG EAST Team selection, McClure had a tremendous fall season, leading the Pirates with a stroke average under 76.00. She became the third golfer in program history to win an individual tournament when she shot 2-over-par to win the Rutgers Invitational. McClure tallied a team-best seven, top-10 finishes and five, top-five finishes in 2013-14. She was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week once in the fall and tied for second among all golfers at the 2014 BIG EAST Championship with a 13-over-par, 229. Her impressive performance helped lead the Pirates to their first BIG EAST team championship in only their fourth year in existence. In the classroom, McClure is a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and was recently named an All-American Scholar by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
Sher capped a decorated career by adding 14 more singles victories at #1 this spring to push her career total to 79 - the second-most in program history. She was rewarded with All-BIG EAST honors for the third consecutive season and was one of five unanimous selections to the 2014 squad. Sher was also one-half of one of the most productive doubles tandems in the league, teaming with classmate Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) to record 12 wins and affirm their spot among the top-10 duos in the Northeast region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Off the court, Sher received the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship in 2013 and has led the tennis program to two-straight Seton Hall team academic awards. Most recently, she became the first Seton Hall student-athlete to take home the BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award.
The total list of 21 honorees all enjoyed banner seasons in 2013-14, with seven collecting All-America certificates, 12 competing in the national postseason at the NCAAs in their respective sports and four earning CoSIDA Academic All-America nods. Twenty earned All-BIG EAST honors, while 13 were members of BIG EAST Championship-winning squads. Five BIG EAST Players of the Year were among those recognized, as well as nine who were either individual champions or voted as the top performers at their respective league championships.
