MS&D Continues Title Chase with Strong Day Two

SEWELL, N.J. - Five Pirates scored in the 500-freestyle and the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team collected second-place points in the 200-free relay, closing the night session on what was an eventful day two for the SHU men at the 2014 BIG EAST Championships.
The team of James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.), Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) held off a charge from Georgetown to finish as the runner-up in the 200-free relay race, reaching the wall one-hundredth of a second ahead of the Hoyas' quartet with a time of 1:23.52.
Xavier took the title by finishing with a final mark of 1:21.23.
Bosse also paced a group of five Seton Hall swimmers who advanced to the consolation final in the 500-free, reaching the wall in 4:39.12 to tie for 10th-place. Senior Jon Ropson (McKinney, Texas) clocked in at 4:41.22 to claim 13th, followed by freshmen Ian Campbell (Corvallis, Ore.) (14th, 4:41.44), Seth Underwood (Collegeville, Pa.) (15th, 4:43.31) and classmate Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) (16th, 4:45.10) in quick succession.
Suter did his part in the 50-free, adding another top-10 finish with a B final time of 21.37, placing .13 seconds outside the ninth position. Senior Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) also earned a second swim in the event and came home in 21.65 to finish 14th.
Senior Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) nearly contributed a third top-10 effort, completing his second 200-IM swim in 1:56.11 to finish 11th.
Xavier sits atop the team leaderboard with 321.50 points through day two. Georgetown ranks second with a collective 257.50 points, ahead of the Pirates who occupy third with 186.50 points.
Competition resumes at 10 a.m. tomorrow as the championships continue on day three of four from the Gloucester Institute of Technology. Events scheduled include the 400-IM, 100-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back and the 400-medley relay.
