SEWELL, N.J. -The Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team will enter the final day of the 2014 BIG EAST Championships in third place after James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.), Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) combined to collect a trio of top-eight finishes on Friday at the Gloucester Institute of Technology.
Logan entered the meet as one of the swimmers to watch in the 100-yard breaststroke and did not disappoint, delivering a pair of season-best times and ultimately taking home a bronze medal with a third-place finish in the final. Logan was consistently fast throughout both sessions, following a 57.12 in prelims with a 57.11 effort in the night cap.
Senior Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) turned in a time of 58.78 to place second in the consolation final and give the Pirates a pair of top-10 finishers in the event, while classmate Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) placed 12th and freshman Jack Poupore (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up 15th-place points.
DeLillo was the squad's top performer in the 100-yard butterfly, tying for sixth place in the championship race in his first trip to the BIG EAST meet. The Rider transfer clocked a time of 50.11 that was fifth-best in preliminary competition and went on to reach the wall in 50.21 in his second swim.
Four more Pirates contributed scoring efforts in the 100-fly as seniors Jon Ropson (McKinney, Texas), Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) and Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) finished consecutively in 13th, 14th and 15th positions followed by freshman Xavier Jimenez (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 16th.
Benson comfortably advanced to the 100-back championship by registering a 51.48 mark in the morning and later placed eighth with a final time of 51.23.
Freshman Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) ranked 11th following the morning session after initially swimming to a time of 52.15 but came back to dominate the consolation final, touching in first at the 50.66 mark with a time that would have been fast enough for third place in the 'A' final. Jimenez added another scoring time in the event, placing 13th overall (52.36).
Carlino, Logan and DeLillo later joined with freshman Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) to place fourth in the 4000-medley relay, collecting a season-best time of 3:24.01 in the event.
Suter also accounted for the top 200-free finish on the men's side for Seton Hall on Friday, earning 12th-place points (1:43.23) to rank just ahead of sophomore Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) who followed a 1:42.40 prelim effort with a 1:43.39 showing in the consolation race.
Seton Hall also had three scorers in the 400-IM, paced by freshman Ian Campbell (Corvallis, Ore.) who finished 10th by virtue of his 4:09.64 showing in the 'B' final. Classmate Seth Underwood (Collegeville, Pa.) finished next (4:10.89) while sophomore Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) placed 13th in 4:13.01.
Following Friday's action, The Hall has accumulated 319 points; trailing second-place Georgetown (493.50) and front-running Xavier who leads with 637 points.
The Championships will conclude with five individual events and one relay on Saturday. Check back on SHUPirates.com tomorrow morning for a full preview of the day four program.
