WICHITA, KAN. - Freshman Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to #11 Wichita State, 77-68, on Tuesday for its first loss of the season.
Whitehead was 8-for-15 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from three-point range. He also had four rebounds.
Seton Hall looked ready for their first true road test early. A three-point play by Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and a three-pointer by Whitehead gave The Hall an early 8-4 lead at the first media timeout. Whitehead's run continued and his second three of the half extended the Pirates' lead to 13-8. Over a four minute span, Whitehead outscored Wichita State, 8-4. The Shockers however, answered with a 13-0 run, highlighted by a break-away dunk by Ron Baker, which gave them a commanding 21-13 lead with 8:18 left in the first half.
A jumper by Whitehead cut the Shocker lead to 23-18, but Wichita State took off again, scoring 11 straight to take a 34-18 advantage with 2:25 to go before halftime.
With 28 seconds left in the half, Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on a floater in the lane. It was the first points scored by a Seton Hall player other than Whitehead since Delgado's three-point play just three and a half minutes into the game.
Wichita State, buoyed by 55% shooting, compared to just 36% for The Hall, took a 40-25 lead into halftime. Whitehead led all scorers in the first half with 18 points.
To make matters worse, Delgado picked up three fouls in the first two minutes of the second half, which sent him to the bench with four fouls and 18:11 left in the game.
Baker and Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) traded three-pointers early in the second half, but then Wichita State again scored buckets on back-to-back possessions to take a 53-32 lead with 14:20 left to play. Seton Hall responded with a modest 10-3 run and a three-point play by Gibbs cut the Shockers' lead to 56-42.
Gibbs finished with 16 points and four assists.
With the lead still 14 points, 60-46, Wichita State went on an 8-0 run, bolstered by back-to-back three-pointers from Fred Van Vleet and Ron Baker, to take their largest lead of the night, 68-46. Seton Hall made a fierce run late, but alas ran out of time and got no closer than the nine point final deficit.
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, December 14 when it returns to the Prudential Center to host Saint Peter's. Game time is scheduled for noon.
