PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Reigning BIG EAST champion Gabby Signorelli (Massapequa, N.Y.) headlined a strong day one for the Seton Hall women's swimming & diving team at a quad meet hosted by Rutgers, delivering a standout performance from the three-meter board that far out-classed competitors from conference rivals Georgetown.
The 2014 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Female Diver, Signorelli turned in a six-dive score of 271.25, finishing more than 80 points ahead of the Hoyas' top finisher Lauren Kahan who compiled a 190.85 mark.
The effort solidified the Massapequa native as one of the favorites to capture gold yet again when the conference meet arrives in February and several other Pirates posted early-season marks that indicate they figure to be in the title hunt as well.
Sophomore Melody Bush (Guelph, Ontario) reached the wall third overall and second among BIG EAST competitors in a field that included Villanova as well as Georgetown and the host Scarlet Knights. Bush's final mark of 58.32 was one of five under the one-minute mark on the day and was bested only by the Wildcats' Gabrielle Daigneault (57.30) among conference opposition.
Junior Megan Mallon (Glen Mills, Pa.) and freshman Sidney Simpson (Tallahassee, Fla.) combined to record two of the four fastest 100-breast times among the three league members in action in Piscataway as Mallon reached the wall in 1:07.60 and was followed by Simpson who clocked in at 1:08.31.
The Hall was paced by a trio of newcomers in four of the five other individual events that were held on day one. Kylene Ronayne (Springfield, Pa.) was the fourth-fastest BIG EAST entrant in the 200-IM (2:11.09) and was also the squad's top finisher in the 200-free with a time of 1:55.26.
Kat Carson (Katy, Texas) sprinted her way to a 50-free time of 24.72 that ranked fifth among conference competitors while classmate Courtney Regan (Southbury, Conn.) finished the 1,000-free in 10:47.63 to stand fifth among the Pirates, Hoyas and Wildcats as well.
Fellow underclassman Tessa Lindner (Sun Prairie, Wisc.) led the way in the 200-fly with a 2:11.53 mark that was also fifth-best among the BIG EAST teams in attendance.
Competition will resume tomorrow, Saturday, November 8 from Rutgers as the Pirates will wrap up the penultimate meet prior to the winter break. Start-time is set for 10:00 a.m.
