SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Both Manthorpe sisters registered double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Georgetown, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-21), for its seventh straight win.
With the victory, Seton Hall improves to 26-6 overall and 14-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. The win also guarantees the Pirates a single-digit loss season for only the third time in Seton Hall history.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched 39 assists, 10 kills and seven digs. She also had an impressive .500 attack percentage. Her sister, Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) finished with a team-best 12 kills to go with 14 digs.
Seton Hall started quickly and a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates an 8-3 lead in set one. Consecutive kills by Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.), followed by another kill from Schroeder extended The Hall's advantage to 20-13. But a 5-0 run by Georgetown pulled the Hoyas to within two, 20-18, and prompted a Seton Hall timeout. With the Pirates seemingly back in control, a kill by Stacey Manthorpe put The Hall in set point, 24-20, but Georgetown came back again and four straight points tied the set at 24. After another Pirates' timeout, another kill by Grammer put The Hall back in set point, 25-24, and a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe ended the set in Seton Hall's favor, 26-24.
Grammer finished the match with 11 kills and just one attack error in 22 attempts for a .455 attack percentage.
With the score tied at two early in set two, Seton Hall scored four straight points to take a 6-2 advantage and never looked back. Although the Pirates didn't use a huge run to blow out the Hoyas, they methodically maintained a marginal lead. With The Hall ahead 21-18, they scored the final four points of the set and a block by Stacey Manthorpe capped a 25-18 set two victory. Thus, the Pirates took a commanding 2-0 match lead.
With a sweep on their minds, the Pirates scored five of the first six points of the third set. A kill by Hansen extended the Pirates' lead to 12-6. Ashani Rubin's (Philadelphia, Pa.) kill made the score 17-11 in favor of the Pirates. Grammer put Seton Hall in set point, 24-19, and three points later, Schroeder's kill ended it, 25-21, to complete the three-set sweep. Seton Hall's offense was dominant in the final frame, attacking successfully at a .571 clip. The Pirates had 18 kills and just two attack errors.
For the match, Seton Hall had an attack percentage of .419, while Georgetown finished at .270.
Seton Hall has clinched the #2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament, Nov. 28-29, in Milwaukee, Wis. Creighton has won the regular season title and the #1 seed. Marquette has clinched the #3 seed. The fourth seed is still up for grabs between Butler and Xavier, who enter their final matches with the same record.
Should Seton Hall and Marquette finished tied at the end of the regular season, the Pirates get the #2 seed because of the fourth tie-breaker. The teams finished 1-1 in head-to-head matches this season. They both won four sets in those matches and they both scored exactly 117 points in their meetings. Because Seton Hall registered a victory over Creighton and Marquette went 0-2 against the Bluejays, Seton Hall earns the tie-breaker.
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 23 when it wraps up the 2014 regular season at Creighton. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
