MILWAUKEE, WIS. - Senior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded a career-high 26 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match at Marquette, 3-1 (34-32, 20-25, 23-25, 33-35), on Saturday to snap its 12-match win streak.
Manthorpe bested her previous career-high by seven kills and also tallied 13 digs for her eighth straight double-double. She committed only three attack errors for a team-best .319 attack percentage.
Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded a career-high 34 digs to go with six assists to lead the Pirates' defense.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) also tallied a double-double with a team-high 49 assists to go with a season-high 23 digs and six kills.
Marquette got off to a quick start in set one, scoring the first five points of the set and prompting an early Seton Hall timeout. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe cut the Golden Eagle lead to 11-8, but Marquette responded with three straight points, which caused the Pirates' to burn their second timeout. Trailing 15-8, the Pirates scored three straight to cut the deficit to 15-11. Blocks by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) and Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) brought Seton hall to within one, 19-18, but the Golden Eagles again gave themselves breathing room. Trailing 23-19, Seton Hall scored four straight to tie the set. From there, the teams played a back-and-forth set, which required significantly more than the standard 25 points. Seton Hall staved off five Marquette set points, and the Golden Eagles stopped the Pirates four times at set point before The Hall finally conquered, 34-32.
Stacey Manthorpe had nine of her nine kills in set one alone.
Whereas Marquette led for the vast majority of set one, it was Seton Hall that grabbed an early lead in set two and maintained it early on. Blocks by Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) and Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave the Pirates an early 10-7 advantage. But Marquette responded with a 5-1 run to take a 12-11 lead. With the set tied at 13, the Golden Eagles scored four straight to take a 17-13 lead. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe cut the Marquette lead to two at 20-18, but the Pirates couldn't get closer and the Golden Eagles evened up the match with a 25-20 set two win.
With the score tied a three early in set three, Seton Hall scored three straight to take a 6-3 advantage. Marquette rebounded however to tie the match at seven, and from there, the set was a back-and-forth affair. A kill by Sekulova gave The Hall a 16-15 lead, but the Golden Eagles responded with three straight points to re-take an 18-16 advantage, which prompted a Pirates' timeout. But the Hall scored four of the next five points and blocks by Hansen and Shelbey Manthorpe put the Pirates back in front, 20-19. In a set of runs however, Marquette struck last. The Golden Eagles scored five straight points to take a commanding 24-20 advantage and held off Seton Hall, 25-23, to take a 2-1 match lead. The Pirates lost set three despite producing an impressive .326 attack percentage in set three. The Hall had 17 kills and just three attack errors, but it wasn't enough.
With the score tied at 11, Marquette scored three straight to take a 14-11 lead in set four. Seton Hall rallied to tie the score at 17, but the Golden Eagles again pulled away with three straight points to go ahead, 20-17. Trailing 23-19, the Pirates scored four straight to tie the set at 23. From there, the set again went into marathon mode. Seton Hall staved off seven match points, while Marquette held the Pirates at bay during three set points. With the score tied at 33, The Hall finally relented, and fell, 35-33, to drop the match in four sets. The epic set featured 19 ties and four lead changes.
For the four-set match, the teams were tied 50 times.
The Pirates did a fine job on preseason Player of the Year Autumn Bailey. The sophomore had 25 kills, but also committed 16 attack errors in 89 attacks for a .101 attack percentage.
A well played defensive match, the teams combined for 203 digs in just four sets. Five players on both teams reached double-figures in digs.
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, October 21 when it travels to nearby Stony Brook for a non-conference matchup. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
