STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Junior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) tallied a match-high 13 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team rolled to a sweep at Stony Brook, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-14), on Tuesday.
Hansen tallied her 13 kills with just one attack error and had a team-best .667 attack percentage.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with a match-best 30 assists to go with nine digs.
Three Pirates had at least seven blocks in a strong defensive effort. Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.), the BIG EAST leader in blocks, led the team with eight. Both Hansen and sophomore Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) had seven blocks apiece.
Seton Hall (19-4) dominated from the very start. In fact, the Seawolves didn't grab a lead in the match until set three.
The Pirates jumped out to an 11-3 lead in set one. Blocks by Rubin and Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) extended the Seton Hall advantage to a commanding 18-7. Leading 21-10, The Hall scored the last four points of the set to crush Stony Brook, 25-11, in set one. The Pirates had 14 kills and just two attack errors in the first frame for an astounding .429 attack percentage. Meanwhile, the Pirates' defense held the Seawolves to a negative attack percentage at -.054.
Set two was much of the same, although the Pirates grabbed their lead in a more methodical fashion. Clinging to an 8-7 lead, Seton Hall scored the next seven straight points and an ace by Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) gave The Hall a commanding 15-7 advantage. Seton Hall never looked back as the Seawolves didn't get closer than six points the rest of the set in the Pirates' 25-14 set two victory. Although Seton Hall's attack percentage wasn't as impressive as set one, it again held Stony Brook to a negative attack percentage.
Stony Brook took their first lead of the match when a kill by Melissa Rigo put the Seawolves ahead, 6-5, in set three. Two points later, Rigo again put Stony Brook in front, 7-6, but it was their last lead of the match. Seton Hall responded with an 8-0 run to take a 14-7 advantage. The Pirates grew the lead to as many as 10 points before defeating Stony Brook, 25-14, in set three, completing the three-set sweep. Like set one, Seton Hall's offense was highly efficient in set three. The Pirates had 15 kills and just three errors for a .462 attack percentage.
The Hall only committed eight attack errors for the entire match.
Seton Hall's performance was so dominant that all 12 members of its roster were able to see action. Junior Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) was able to record her first career kill in the victory.
Seton Hall returns to action on Friday, October 24 when it returns to Walsh Gym to host Xavier. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
