LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team scored an impressive early season victory on Thursday, going on the road and capturing a 160-138 win over reigning MAAC Champions Rider in Lawrenceville.
Seven different Pirates combined for eight individual victories on the evening with newcomer Zohar Suslovich (Holon, Israel) leading the way with a pair of first-place finishes.
Making just his second collegiate appearance, Suslovich reached the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.50, pacing an all-Seton Hall top-three in the event. Freshman Michael Mattera (Deer Park, N.Y.) collected a runner-up time of 1:57.54 while sophomore Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took third in 1:58.20.
The same three competitors also swept the top-three spots in the 100-back as Carlino (51.92) clocked in first followed by Suslovich (53.26) and Mattera (54.90).
Suslovich closed the meet with a victorious time of 1:59.50 in the 200-IM, out-pacing teammate and fellow newcomer Matt Zebrowski (Sayreville, N.J.) by three-tenths of a second.
Zebrowski notched a victory of his own in the 200-fly, finishing in 1:54.64 to edge Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) as The Hall collected 13 points in the event.
Yanchulis added a third-place effort in the 1,000-free, an event won by another Seton Hall freshman in Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) who posted a 9:47.68 mark.
A fourth victory for Seton Hall's extensive crop of newcomers came courtesy of Sean Sali (Bridgewater, N.J.) who topped the 100-breast field by reaching the wall in 59.09. Senior James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) secured third-place points in the event with a 59.81 performance.
The reigning BIG EAST champion in the 200-breast, Logan picked up The Hall's seventh triumph in the pool, out-touching the Broncs' top -two competitors with a time of 2:10.47.
Another defending conference champion who also earned the league's first Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week Award with a standout effort against Montclair State, senior Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) once again came within mere points of breaking his own 3-meter school record.
For the second time in as many outings, Mitchell eclipsed the 340-point mark, earning the win with a six-dive total of 342.45. The Milford native also topped the 300-point plateau in 1-meter competition, clinching a berth in the NCAA Zone A Regional Championships in the spring.
The matchup with the Broncs stands as the Pirates' second-to-last dual meet of the fall as next up on the schedule is a trip to Baltimore on Saturday, October 25 for a quad meet with Drexel, Lafayette and hosts Loyola (Md.). Start-time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
