BALTIMORE, MD. - First place finishes by senior Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) and freshman Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) were supported by a total of 10 runner-up efforts for the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving squad on Saturday as the Pirates raced their way to a pair of team victories at a quad meet hosted by Loyola (MD).
The Hall dominated its matchups with Lafayette (215-79) and the host Greyhounds (194-106) but were edged by Drexel (166.5-133.5), moving its record to 4-1 on the young season.
Already the most decorated diver in program history, Mitchell added another notch to his resume by topping the 300-point mark for the fourth time this season in a victorious showing in three-meter competition. Mitchell's six-dive score of 328.75 was more than 30 points ahead of Drexel's Davis Sanchez who had edged the Milford native for the top spot from the one-meter board.
Sophomore Alex Pfisterer (Mohnton, Pa.) added fourth-place scores in each event.
Yanchulis registered the team's lone victory in the pool but the squad was consistently contending for first-place honors throughout the afternoon. The freshman led three Pirates in the top-five of the 200-free event, reaching the wall in 1:43.97. Junior Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) ranked fourth (1:45.41); four-hundredths of a second ahead of freshman Jason Tan (Bridgewater, N.J.).
Bosse (48.59) and Tan (48.79) were also the team's top performers in the 100-free, placing fourth and fifth respectively.
In relay competition, Bosse, Tan, and Yanchulis teamed with Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) to collect a second-place time of 3:12.03 in the 400-free.
As an individual, Yanchulis delivered another standout performance in the 200-IM where he posted a 1:57.82 mark to finish in second just ahead of classmate Zohar Suslovich (Holon, Israel) (1:57.97). Fellow newcomer Matt Zebrowski (Sayreville, N.J.) earned fifth-place points in the event, reaching the wall in 1:59.36.
Suslovich and Zebrowski also combined for three second-place efforts of their own, contributing key points as the meet progressed.
Zebrowski completed the day as the team's top performer in butterfly events, occupying the runner-up position at both the 100 and 200 yard distances. In the 100-yard event, Zebrowski (52.03) and senior Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) (52.55, fourth) led the way while at 200-yards, the Sayreville product posted a 1:55.58 mark that was supported by a fifth-place finish from sophomore Seth Underwood (Collegeville, Pa.).
During 200-back competition, Suslovich (1:55.36, second) clocked in first out of three Pirates to crack the top-five as freshman Michael Mattera (Deer Park, N.Y.) (1:57.38) and Carlino (1:57.58) added fourth and fifth place showings.
Carlino excelled at the 100-yard distance in the backstroke, picking up a second-place time of 52.07 that was just over 1.5 seconds ahead of Suslovich in fourth.
The Hopewell Junction native also swam the opening leg for a 200-medley relay squad that included Bosse, DeLillo and freshman Sean Sali (Bridgewater, N.J.) that earned second-place points with a collective time of 1:34.78.
Sali and classmate Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) also accounted for The Hall's two other individual runner-up finishes in Baltimore, narrowly missing adding victories in 100-breast and 1,000-free competition.
Quickly asserting himself as another breaststroke threat for The Hall, Sali reached the wall in 58.80. Fellow newcomer Collin Dunn (Litchfield, Conn.) added fifth-place points with a time of 1:00.80.
After swimming to a victory in the 1,000-free at Rider, Wimmer continued to impress by clocking in at 9:49.63 to claim second on Saturday. Underwood added a fifth-place time of 10:10.24.
The Pirates will now gear up for their final dual meet of the fall as the team is scheduled to make its lone home appearance prior to winter break next Saturday, November 1 against Providence. Start-time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
