SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Both Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated Georgetown, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19), on Saturday for its 11th straight victory.
Shelbey Manthorpe notched a team-high 39 assists and 11 digs, while Stacey Manthorpe tallied a team-high 17 kills to go with 15 digs.
For the second straight match, Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a big night defensively at the net. The senior blocked a match-high 11 attacks.
Coming off an emotional five-set victory over Creighton the night before, the Pirates were a bit sluggish in set one. Seton Hall scored the first three points, but its lead was short-lived. With the score tied at five, Georgetown scored five of the next six points to take a 10-6 lead and never trailed again. The Pirates cut the Hoya lead to one, 22-21, on a kill by Stacey Manthorpe, but couldn't get closer. Georgetown ended the set with three of the last four points to win, 25-22. The Pirates connected on a paltry .043 of their attacks in set one and committed eight errors.
Seton Hall (17-3, 7-0) again started slow in set two, but didn't allow Georgetown to pull away. It was, by far, the closest set of the match as the teams played to nine ties. With the score knotted at 21, a kill by Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) put the Pirates in front for good. A Georgetown attack error put Seton Hall in set point and a kill by Stacey Manthorpe won set two for The Hall, 25-22, to tie the match at one set apiece. Despite the positive outcome, the Pirates were still out-shot in set two, but fortunately kept their attack errors down.
Set three was all Seton Hall. Georgetown never led as the Pirates took an early 6-3 lead and methodically increased it throughout the set. An ace by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) gave The Hall a commanding 21-14 advantage. Stacey Manthorpe put the Pirates in set point, 24-16, and a Grammer kill ended set three, 25-17, in Seton Hall's favor. The Pirates attacked at a fierce .429 clip in the third frame, recording 14 kills and just two errors.
Grammer finished the night with 10 kills. It's the eighth time in her last nine matches that she's reached double-figures in kills.
Set four was closer, but the Pirates took control late. With Georgetown leading 9-8, the Pirates scored four straight and Simona Sekulova's (Auckland, New Zealand) kill gave them a 12-9 lead. Seton Hall never trailed again as the lead grew to 19-13 on a kill by Stacey Manthorpe. With the Pirates leading 23-18, two more kills by Stacey Manthorpe sealed the set for The Hall, 25-19, and the match, 3-1. Stacey Manthorpe and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had five kills apiece in set four alone.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, October 17 when it travels to DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
