NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to unbeaten Missouri, 3-0 (13-25, 16-25, 15-25), Saturday as part of the 2013 Yale University Tournament.
Missouri improves to 7-0 and has lost only one set so far this year.
Despite losses in four of its first five matches (1-4), today's result represents the first time Seton Hall has been swept. All three of the Pirates' prior losses were hard-fought with two ending in five sets.
Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led Seton Hall offensively with six kills and a .176 attack percentage. Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had 20 assists and senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led the Pirates with 10 digs.
Seton Hall never led in the match and the Tigers got off to a quick start in set one. Missouri took an early 5-1 lead, but the Pirates fought back to close the gap to 11-8. However, an 8-1 Missouri run put the set away and the Tigers cruised to a 25-13 first set victory.
Set two was much of the same as Missouri scored 15 of the first 20 points. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) cut the Tiger lead in half at 21-16, but Missouri scored the last four points of the set to win, 25-16, and take a commanding two-sets-to-none match lead.
Missouri scored the first four points of set three and the Pirates again had to play from behind. Seton Hall cut the Tiger lead to two at 16-14, but Missouri ended the set with a 9-1 run to complete the three-set sweep.
Juniors Jamie Froning (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) made their season debuts.
Seton Hall will wrap up play at the Yale University Tournament against host Yale at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
