SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University men's soccer team defeated The College of New Jersey, 1-0, in an exhibition matchup Friday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
The teams played a total of three periods, a pair of 40 minute stanzas followed by an additional 30 minutes of action. Sophomore midfielder Eric Lagg (Lafayette, N.J.) provided the offensive spark the Pirates were looking for in the fifth minute of the third period.
Junior Alex Megna (Hales Corners, Wis.), who transferred to Seton Hall after playing his first two collegiate seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, sent an excellent through ball up to Lagg on the left side that he managed to chase down and send to the far right side to give SHU the lead.
Just three minutes later Lagg nearly factored in a second goal. Controlling the ball on the right side of the area he sent a crisp cross to sophomore Max Moog (Newfoundland, N.J.) who fired toward the left side of the net but just wide of the post.
Overall Seton Hall dominated play against the Lions, holding its opponent without a shot on net while firing 30 more shots overall than the opposition.
The opening period saw a flurry of strong offensive chances for the Pirates but they were unable to capitalize.
Just over 20 minutes into the action junior Andrew LoManto (Massepequa, N.Y.) squared to fire a low shot from the 18-yard line on net that was turned away. In the 26th minute of play redshirt freshman Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.) connected with junior Konrad Plewa (Maniowy, Poland) by sending a line drive pass from the right side, but Plewa's shot toward the left post was snatched out of the air.
Freshman Samuel Geiler (Offenberg, Germany) was extremely active on the offensive end in the first period, displaying several impressive moves to work through the defense and create scoring opportunities. One of his best attempts came in the 35th minute when he attempted to find the top left corner from 180-yards out, but missed just high and left.
Second year head coach Gerson Echeverry played three goalkeepers in the contest, with freshman Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) receiving the start, senior Kevin Bonder (Whippany, N.J.) playing the second period and junior Mario DeClerico (Maple Shade, N.J.) closing things out, but none of the three were ever seriously tested.
Seton Hall will play one more exhibition game before the regular season officially gets under way. The Pirates host Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Aug. 27, on Owen T. Carroll Field at 7 p.m.
The regular season opener comes just three days later as Seton Hall welcomes the Rhode Island Rams to South Orange. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
