PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With the Pirates searching for their fourth victory in six head-to-head meets this season, six different members of the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team came up with wins to help SHU glide past Providence, 175-118, on the road.
Senior Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) and juniors James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) and Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) recorded two wins apiece; each sweeping a particular discipline.
Benson was victorious in both backstroke races, first posting a time of 1:00.59 in the 100-meter event and later claiming the 200-meter race with a 2:11.19 mark. In both of Benson's wins SHU had a representative finish third as junior Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) did so at 100 meters as did senior Evan Forbes (Cinnaminson, N.J.) at 200 meters.
Logan went unbeaten in breaststroke competition, occupying the top slot in an all-Pirate top-three in the 100-meter breaststroke before taking home the 200-meter event as well. Logan's 1:07.19 performance at 100 meters was followed up by two Seton Hall seniors in Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) who finished in quick succession. At 200 meters, he clocked in at 2:31.89 while DeLisio reached the wall in second nearly four ticks later.
Mitchell was the preeminent force from the diving board on the day, twice scoring over 290 points for a six-dive set while Providence did not field a diver who scored over 207. Mitchell topped out at a 318.52 mark that began to approach his own school record. Sophomore Eric Davidson (Overland Park, Kan.) continued to display improved form, ranking second in both competitions.
DeLillo was one of three Pirate swimmers who recorded a single victory at the meet as he surpassed the 50-meter freestyle field with a time of 24.88 that was a fingertip ahead of teammate Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) in second (24.90).
Senior Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) was the top finisher in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:12.54 while sophomore Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) added a win in the 200-meter freestyle, out-touching Providence's Kyle McLaughlin to record a time of 1:57.94 that was .05 seconds faster than the runner-up.
The Seton Hall men recorded a total of 10 victories in 16 events, the first of which came when the 200-meter medley relay squad of Benson, Logan, DeLillo and Suter clocked in a 1:48.95.
The Pirates have now won three of their last four head-to-head matchups and stand at 4-2 for the season. Next up is a short trip to Piscataway on Friday and Saturday (11/8-11/9) for a tri-meet against BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Villanova that will be hosted by Rutgers. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
