NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team took first place in the first seven events against Iona and never looked back, securing a 166-119 win on the road on Monday night.
The Pirates produced the top finisher in 11 of 16 events overall as nine different individuals recorded a first-place effort against the Gaels.
The 200-yard medley squad of Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), James Logan (Wallingford,
Pa.), Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) got it started with a win in the first swimming event of the night as Logan's second leg gave the team a lead it never relinquished.
Senior Jon Ropson (McKinney, Texas) flew past all Iona entrants in the 1,000-free; clocking a 10:13.33 to lead an all-SHU top-three that also included sophomore Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) and freshman Cooper Lindsley (Lancaster, Pa.).
In the 200-free, Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) was the top performer with a time of 1:47.41 while Carlino followed with a victory in the 100-back (53.87) that only widened the gap. Senior Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) placed third by registering a time of 57.03.
Senior Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) kept the string of wins going, finishing atop the 100-breast field in 1:01.79. Classmate Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) accounted for the seventh victory, pacing the 200-fly race by finishing in 2:00.94. Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) reached the wall next, touching in at 2:01.36.
DeLillo nearly made it eight in a row in the 50-free race, finishing just .01 seconds off the winning time with a 22.43 effort. He would later pick up a win of his own in the 100-fly as his time of 51.13 was more than two seconds clear of second place.
Benson added his name to the list of winners in the 200-back, as his 2:03.35 time led a Seton Hall sweep of the top-three positions. Bosse placed second, just ahead of senior Evan Forbes (Cinnaminson, N.J.) in third.
Logan turned in a time of 2:15.82 to finish at the top of the 200-yard breaststroke field, edging DeLisio who finished second.
In his first action since re-setting his own school records over two days at Rutgers over the weekend, junior diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) set the standard from both the one and three-meter boards at IC as well. Mitchell scored a 273.30 from three-meters and later tallied a 289.80 at one-meter.
Sophomore Eric Davidson (Overland Park, Kan.) scored in excess of 230 points in each event as well, continuing a fall in which he has perhaps been the most improved performer on the team. Davidson, who closed his freshman campaign with a scoring effort at the BIG EAST Championships, has registered career-high scores from both boards this season and has earned the right to compete at both one and three meters at the conference meet for the first time in his career.
The win was the third for Seton Hall in four head-to-head meets thus far and sends the Pirates into their final competition of the fall with some momentum. SHU heads to George Mason for the Patriot Invitational next week as the team will compete over three consecutive days beginning Thursday, November 21.
