STORRS, CONN. – Following a quick turnaround, the Seton Hall men’s swimming & diving team was back in the pool less than 24 hours after defeating Marist in their first meet of 2013. Up against Connecticut in Storrs on Sunday, the Pirates dropped a 180-108 decision to fall to 4-5 on the season.
SHU’s efforts in the second of the back-to-back were highlighted by freshman Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.), who led Seton Hall in two events and turned in three top-five performances. Bosse picked up second-place points in the 200-yard freestyle, reaching the wall in 1:45.40. He also clocked Seton Hall’s best 200-back time of the day, finishing fourth, and came in fifth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Just over halfway into his first season, the New Windsor native has now recorded 15 top-five finishes to go with five wins. He has also surpassed automatic qualifying standards for the 2013 BIG EAST Championship in five different events.
Like Bosse, Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) contributed a runner-up effort while recording three top-five finishes against the Huskies. The senior co-captain took second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.10. He then went on to finish fifth in the 200-back and swam the fourth-fastest 200-IM time in his final race.
Acheson, who leads the Pirates with automatic qualifying times in seven events, has placed in the top-five on 17 occasions and ranks second on the team with six wins to this point in the season.
Freshman Steve Hausmann (North Attleboro, Mass.) continued his impressive start to 2013, picking up his third top-three finish of the weekend. Hausmann placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle, leading the Pirates and setting a personal record with a time of 9:55.36.
One day removed from picking up his first career win and earning a spot in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship in the process, Hausmann paced SHU in the 200-yard breaststroke for the second-straight day. His final time of 2:16.95 was good enough for fourth place.
Less than 30 miles from his hometown of Wethersfield, Connecticut-native Joey Lacus produced The Hall’s best performances of the meet in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles.
Lacus finished third in both events and in the 100-free; he was immediately followed to the wall by teammate James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) in fourth. It was the second top-four of the meet for Logan who had previously placed fourth to lead SHU in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Pirates were also aided by a pair of top-four efforts from senior Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.). Keyser played a key role for the squad in distance races, beginning his day with a fourth-place time in the 1,000-yard freestyle and closing it by placing third in the 500-free.
Junior Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) also had a third-place time to his credit, completing the 100-yard butterfly in 54.90. In all, Black had two top-five finishes at Connecticut on Sunday, pushing his season total to 11.
In diving competition, sophomore Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) followed up another record-setting day with a second-place score from one-meter. He also registered a third-place finish from the three-meter board.
Seton Hall will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. next weekend to compete at the Bison Invitational. Hosted by Bucknell University, the day-long event is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2.
