Seton Hall's leading scorer provided all the offense the Pirates would need in a 1-0 victory over No. 19 Monmouth on Friday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. It is the third time in his career Garcia earns BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades.
Garcia handled a great close-range crossing pass from junior George Velasquez (Union City, N.J.) in the 18th minute, beating Monmouth goalkeeper Alex Blackburn to record the game-winner and lift the Pirates to their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
With four goals and an assist through seven games Garcia leads the Seton Hall offensive attack, and currently sits in a tie for sixth in the BIG EAST in goals scored, a tie for seventh in total points, and a tie for third with 25 shot attempts.
Seton Hall's win over Monmouth was the first over a ranked team for first-year head coach Gerson Echeverry and also snapped a three-game SHU losing streak in the all-time series with the regional rival. The Pirates limited Monmouth to just two shots on net, to hand the No. 19 Hawks their first loss and shutout of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Kevin Bonder (Whippany, N.J.) made both saves to record his first shutout of the season and third of his career.
Seton Hall (3-4) returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when it heads to Newark, Del., to face the University of Delaware at 7:00 p.m. The match is the final warm-up for the Pirates before they open BIG EAST play at Syracuse University on Saturday night.
