Saturday night's game was the first opportunity for new head coach Gerson Echeverry to see his new team in action and the Pirates created several highlights despite not getting on the scoreboard.
Freshman Julian Kennedy (Nindorf, Germany) impressed in the backfield, as did junior forward Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) who created a number of strong scoring throughout the game.
Seton Hall's best scoring chance of the night came late in the second half, when with under 10 minutes to play a cross into the box found sophomore Jeremy Witherspoon (South Orange, N.J.), but his header sailed to the left of the net.
The Pirates started junior Kevin Bonder (Whippany, N.J.) in goal and he helped keep Fairleigh Dickinson off the scoreboard with one save in the first half. Redshirt senior Michael Kuzan (Union, N.J.) came in to play goal in the second half and made three saves, but also surrendered a pair of goals.
The first FDU strike came in the 53rd minute when Anders Vest-Hansen cleaned up a rebound a to put his team in front 1-0. The second goal came off a penalty kick in the 87th minute with SHU freshman back Lino Suriano (Lebanon, N.J.) called for a takedown in the box; Miguel Escobar converted the PK for the Knights.
Suriano made up for the foul just moments later when FDU had an opportunity to make the score 3-0 before he swooped in from behind the play to strip the ball away and prevent the Knights from taking advantage of a breakaway.
Fairleigh Dickinson finished the game with a 12-7 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even at 3-3. FDU starting goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made a pair of saves in the first half.
Seton Hall will play a second exhibition contest this Tuesday, Aug. 21, when it hosts Bloomfield College at Owen T. Carroll Field at 7 p.m.
