SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her eighth triple-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team dropped its third straight match, a 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25) setback to Notre Dame, on Saturday.
Manthorpe tallied 11 kills to go with 32 assists and 14 digs for her 12th career triple-double.
Sister Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her 16th double-double of the year with a team-leading 14 kills to go with 12 digs.
Junior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had a strong defensive game with a match-high 29 digs.
Senior Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and freshman Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) also reached double-figures in kills with 10 and 12 respectively.
Notre Dame (18-6, 11-1) dominated the first set, jumping out to an early 10-3 lead. Seton Hall cut the deficit to four at 11-7, but got no closer. Leading 14-9, the Fighting Irish went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 23-11 lead and coasted to a 25-15 victory.
The Irish grabbed an early 5-1 lead in set two as well, but the Pirates refused to go down quietly and rallied to tie the set at eight. With the score tied at nine, Seton Hall scored the next four points and took the lead for good. With the Pirates ahead, 20-17, they scored the next four points to give them their largest lead of the set, 24-17. Seton Hall would eventually win the set, 25-19, and tie the match at one set apiece.
Seton Hall (17-8, 5-7) grabbed the early lead in set three, feeding off the momentum from their set two win. A kill by Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.) gave the Pirates their largest lead of the set at 13-8, but Notre Dame went on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 13. From there, the teams tied four more times until Toni Alugbue's kill gave the Irish a 19-18 lead, the first of three straight points for Notre Dame. Seton Hall pulled to within two points at 23-21, but the Irish scored the last two points of the set and won, 25-21.
With their backs against the wall, Seton Hall jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in set four. Notre Dame however, rallied to take an 8-7 lead and never trailed again. Andrea McHugh's kill gave the Irish a 17-12 lead, their largest of the set. The Pirates pulled to within two at 24-22, but a final kill by Alugbue ended the set and the match.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow for its final home match of the season. The Pirates will host DePaul at 2:00 p.m. at Walsh Gym. Immediately following the match, Seton Hall will honor six graduating seniors.
