SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team narrowly edged Columbia, 1-0, on Tuesday night. The Pirates move to 4-3-2 overall, which surpasses their win total from a season ago.
The lone tally of the game came briefly after a Lions player was given a red card and ejected from the contest. Sophomore Max Garcia's (Jersey City, N.J.) free kick from 30-yards out was deflected by Columbia keeper Alexander Aurrichio, leading to a corner kick. Freshman Kai Greene (South Orange, N.J.) connected with Giovanni Zammiello (Randolph, N.J.), who headed the ball into the short-side of the net from the left side for his second goal of the season. The assist was the first collegiate point of Greene's career.
Another red card by the Lions in the 63rd minute gave Seton Hall a two-man advantage on which they were unable to capitalize on. Through the adversity, Columbia played at its best during the final minutes of the game, controlling possession and generating a pair of corner kicks. However, the Pirates defense minimized quality scoring chances and held on for the win.
SHU outshot the Lions, 10-2, in the second half and held a 15-6 edge for the game. Columbia had no shots on goal in the game, giving freshman Mario DeClerico (Maple Shade, N.J.) his second shutout in three starts.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, October 1, when they host Villanova at 7:00 p.m.
