SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's soccer team fell to Villanova by a 3-0 count on Saturday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. The loss drops the Pirates to 4-4-2 overall and 0-2-0 in BIG EAST play.
SHU suffered a big blow in the ninth minute when sophomore Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) was sent off after a physical challenge with the Wildcats (4-4-2, 1-1-0) goalkeeper. The Pirates were able to withstand the loss for much of the first half, but in the 43rd minute Ryan Whalen found Emerson Lawrence making a run down the right side and scored his fourth of the season to give Villanova the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, Dylan Renna controlled the ball after a corner kick and fed Kyle McCarthy, who rifled in a shot to the left-corner from just inside the goal box.
Renna put the finishing touches on the win with a strike from the 18 that hit the inside of the crossbar and dropped in to make it 3-0.
The Wildcats held a 12-5 edge on shots and a 6-2 advantage on corners.
Freshman Mario DeClerico (Maple Shade, N.J.) suffered the loss (1-2-1) and made two saves.
Seton Hall will take on Princeton on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m. to wrap up non-conference play at Owen T. Carroll Field.
