SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - For the second straight game, the Seton Hall men's soccer team put forth a strong effort, but came out on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to #20 Georgetown on Wednesday evening. The Pirates dropped to 4-7-2 overall and 0-4-0 in BIG EAST play.
SHU took the lead in the ninth minute when a gorgeous cross from Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, N.J.) from the top-left side of the goal pass found the feet of Jason Wellington (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Wellington fired a shot from eight yards out that beat the Hoya keeper as he dove to the left.
Georgetown came up with the equalizer after Steve Neumann saw Tyler Rudy slip out of sight of a Pirate defender down the right side. Rudy skidded a one-touch pass through traffic in the middle and Andy Riemer's low shot hit the left corner of the net to even things up, 1-1, in the 25th minute.
In the 53rd minute, a cross attempt by the Hoyas was punched out by goalkeeper Mario DeClerico (Maple Shade, N.J.), but the ball went right to Neumann, who had all sorts of time and scored his seventh of the year from point-blank range.
Neumann was at it again in the 65th minute, scooping up a failed clearing attempt by SHU. He then dribbled inside the box, waited for Riemer to join the play and unselfishly made a nifty pass to his teammate on the right to wrap up the scoring.
Both teams got off a good amount of shots with Georgetown holding a 19-13 advantage for the game. The Pirates held a slim lead in corners, 5-4.
DeClerico suffered the loss after making four saves on the night.
Seton Hall is back in action this Saturday, October 15, at Providence. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
