His six hits and seven RBI at the College World Series are both team records. In his senior season, he clubbed what is still a Seton Hall single-season record 15 home runs and was named first-team All-American and first-team Academic All-American. At the time of his induction, he held records for career doubles (27); most home runs in a season (15); most career home runs (26); slugging average (.779), and RBI in season (64). In 1975, he was the seventh overall first round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the MLB Amateur Draft and made his major league debut later that year. He went on to have an 18-year career in the Majors, including a seventh-place finish in the MVP voting in 1980 with the New York Yankees.
