Michael “Shep” Sheppard, Sr.

Michael Sheppard, Sr., former captain of the baseball team, spent 31 seasons as the Seton Hall University baseball skipper, recording 28 winning seasons and a 998-540-11 (.648) overall record. One of the winningest baseball coaches in NCAA history, Sheppard led the Pirates to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 1974–75, nine additional NCAA Tournament appearances and BIG EAST championships in 1987 and 2001. The three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year had over 80 of his former athletes sign professional baseball contracts with 30 reaching Major League Baseball. His No. 17 is retired at Seton Hall, and Essex County renamed its Ivy Hill Park softball field “Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field” in his honor.
