New York, N.Y. -- The Seton Hall men's basketball put forth a valiant effort against seventh-ranked St. John's but free throws and rebounding plagued the Pirates as the Red Storm survived, 71-61, at Madison Square Saturday afternoon.
In his 150th career game as a collegian, Dylan Addae-Wusu scored 18 points for the second straight game while matching his season high with seven assists and coming up with four steals. Isaiah Coleman added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Pirates.
Despite the strong effort, the Pirates were held back due to a minus-18 output on the glass and allowing St. John's to finished with a 14-3 edge on the offensive boards. The Hall also couldn't overcome a 43 percent shooting performance from the free throw line.Â
How It Happened
The Pirates took the game's first punch, opening up the contest on a 6-0 run capped off by midrange jumper from Prince Aligbe that forced St. John's to call a timeout. A three-point basket from Coleman at the 15:30 mark of the first half gave Seton Hall its largest lead of the game, 10-2.
St. John's countered with a 12-2 run to give itself its first lead of the game but back-to-back buckets by Yacine Toumi tied the score at 16-16 with 10:10 to go before halftime. With the The Red Storm leading by four, 20-16, Emmanuel Okorafor scored the next five Seton Hall points that helped keep the Pirates within striking distance. Their answer came with 2:44 left in the first half when Addae-Wusu made a three-pointer and a steal by Garwey Dual led to a Coleman dunk, prompting St. John's to use its second timeout.
The Red Storm closed the half on a 7-2 run that put them in front by four, 34-30. St. John's scored the first bucket of the second half before a Godswill Erheriene layup and consecutive buckets from Coleman tied the score at 36-36. The Hall would later tie the score again at 49-49 on a Coleman fadeaway jumper with 10:01 left but a Red Storm fastbreak basket gave them the lead again at 51-49.
