South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall's defense stood strong for the majority of Saturday night, but a late goal gave UConn a 1-0 victory over the Pirates at Owen T. Carroll Field. Prior to the match, Grace and Sarah Mitchell were recognized as the team celebrated its Senior Night.
How it Happened
While UConn held the shot advantage on the night, 13-1, many of the Huskies' chances were not overly threatening. Seton Hall goalkeeper Kate Kleinsmith was first called into action in the 23rd minute, making the stop on a shot from Chioma Okafor at the near post. The Pirates' best look came off the foot of Reece Paget in the 35th minute as she got behind a shot from the edge of the penalty area but sailed it high.
UConn looked as if it had broken the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute, when a mad scramble in the box led to a shot from Taylor Jenkins with Pirate goalkeeper Avery Strohecker off her line. Sarah Mitchell was able to get in the way of the would-be goal and keep the match scoreless.
Strohecker, who was subbed on after halftime, made a save of her own in the 59th minute to chip into the solid Seton Hall defensive effort. UConn was able to break through late, as a goal from Naia Ocio in the 82nd minute gave the Huskies the lead and eventually the win.
