South Orange, N.J. - The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, the fundraising arm of Seton Hall Athletics, held its annual Giving Day event April 17-18, in conjunction with Seton Hall University Giving Day, and it was a resounding success, thanks to the support of so many Pirate Blue members, alumni and former student-athletes. Through the Giving Day initiative that included multiple donor challenges, Pirate Blue raised over $365,000 from over 750 donors.
For the 11th straight year, Pirate Blue was issued its 50-state challenge by an anonymous donor, who pledged $50,000 if Pirate Blue received at least one donation from someone in all 50 U.S. States on the first day of Giving Day. The Pirates once again completed the challenge with the final state, Wisconsin, coming in just before 5 p.m., Eastern.
New this year was a special challenge from Seton Hall supporters Michael and Shannon Murphy. They pledged to give $150,000 towards the new Basketball Practice Facility if 150 donors made a gift to the facility before the end of Giving Day. Seton Hall supporters rose to the challenge, meeting the 150-donor requirement before the first day ended.
This was the second year of the varsity team challenge. The 14 varsity sports were broken up into divisions, and the team in each division that had the most Giving Day donors won an extra $2,000 gift that goes towards supporting the program. The winners of the extra $2,000 gift were men's golf, women's soccer, swimming & diving and volleyball.
The Pirate Blue Athletic Fund directly supports the Seton Hall Department of Athletics and its student-athletes. Pirate Blue strives to embrace and engage the most dedicated Pirate fans within the Seton Hall community to further promote the passion and camaraderie that makes the University so unique. Giving Day is not the only day you can donate; you can make a tax-deductible contribution and join Pirate Blue any day of the year by going online or by calling 973-275-6447.
