Cayce, S.C. - The top three singles competitors of the Seton Hall women's tennis team won their first BIG EAST Championship singles matches of their careers to push the Pirates into a 3-3 tie with Villanova, however the Wildcats came away with a 4-3 win over the Pirates after taking a three-set win at No. 6, Thursday in the BIG EAST Championship first round at Cayce Tennis Center. The Wildcats advance to the quarterfinals to face DePaul Friday.
Anastasia Sereda, Imogen Brooker and Aina Plana Ventosa were fantastic, winning at Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively, to put the Pirates in a position to win.
After losing to Ami Grace Dougah just nine days ago, Sereda returned the favor in the championship, winning at No. 1 in three very competitive sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Her win pushed her to 10 singles victories for 2023-24, a strong milestone for a freshman, especially since she's competing in the top spot of the lineup.
Brooker took down Maggie Gehrig at No. 2 for the second time in nine days, and just like the last match, it went three sets with Brooker winning the first, Gehrig the second, and then Brooker finishing strong with a 6-1 win in the third. Brooker, also a freshman, ended the season a very strong 13-13 in singles, including 11-8 during the spring and wins in five of her last six matches.
Plana Ventosa exacted revenge on Miriam Gondorova, who defeated her nine days ago. This time Plana Ventosa cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 position. She ended the season with a team-best 14-6 overall singles record, 13-3 during the spring.Â
The match came down to the No. 6 position, where Arabella Moen won the first set, but Valieriia Kornieva battled back from a second-set deficit to force a third set. Kornieva then went up 5-0, Moen fought back to break Kornieva and take two games, but Kornieva prevailed, 6-2, to clinch Villanova's victory.
Seton Hall concludes the season with its most team wins since 2018-19 and with three Pirates winning double-digit matches in both singles and doubles.
