
Pirates Battle, But Fall to No. 18 Marquette

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In a matchup between two teams combining for only one loss in BIG EAST Conference play, the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 18 Marquette, 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 16-25) on Saturday.

Seton Hall had only three more attack errors than the Golden Eagles, but it was Marquette's defensive back line that prevented the Pirates from regularly finding the floor. The Hall falls to 4-2 in conference play, while Marquette is undefeated at 6-0 and has dropped only one set in BIG EAST play so far.

Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) led The Hall with nine kills, while Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) had a team-best 11 digs.

The Hall had an impressive afternoon defensively at the net with four Pirates collecting at least four blocks. Junior Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) led the team with six blocks.

SET 1:
A couple of early blocks by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and a kill by Walsh tied the score at six early in set one, but Marquette responded with five straight points to take an 11-6 lead and force a Pirate timeout. The Golden Eagles extended their run to 10-2 taking a commanding 16-8 advantage. The Pirates scored three straight late, and an ace by Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) cut their deficit to 22-15, but Marquette went on to win the opener, 25-16. The Hall mustered just a .032 attack percentage, compared to .333 for the Golden Eagles.

A service ace by Holland gave The Hall a 10-9 lead, but the Golden Eagles responded with an 10-2 run to take a commanding 19-12 advantage. The Pirates closed to within 22-17 late, but Marquette was able to hold them off for a 25-18 victory.Â

The Hall scored three of the first four points of the third set, but Marquette bounced back with a 6-0 run and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles upped their run to 13-1 to take a commanding 14-4 advantage. A kill by Walsh, followed by a pair of service aces by Walsh, cut Seton Hall's deficit to 14-7, but Marquette responded with an 8-2 run to put the set out of reach.Â

Seton Hall will return to action when it makes the short trip to Queens, N.Y. for a match at St. John's on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Â Â Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
