
Seton Hall Drops BIG EAST Opener at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) registered a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team dropped its 2017 BIG EAST Conference opener at Marquette, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 19-25), on Friday.
SET 1:
Seton Hall (6-8, 0-1) never led in the first set as Marquette jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. A block by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) cut the Golden Eagle lead to 11-7, but Marquette responded by scoring five of the next seven points to take a commanding 16-9 advantage. The Pirates had a match-low .091 attack percentage in set one as they fell, 25-20.
SET 2:
Marquette scored the first three points of the second set, but the Pirates bounced back with a 6-1 run, and three straight kills by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) gave The Hall a 6-4 lead. Trailing 12-11, Marquette scored four of the next six points to take the lead for good and prompt a Seton Hall timeout. A kill by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) cut the Golden Eagle advantage to 21-19, but Marquette ended the set with four of the next five points to win, 25-20.
SET 3:
Although the Pirates never led, they kept the third set close until Marquette pulled away late. A kill by Thelen cut the Golden Eagle lead to 19-18, and forced a Marquette timeout. Marquette regrouped however, and out of the break, finished the set by collecting six of the final seven points, 25-19.
Inside the Numbers:
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Chicago, Illinois to take on DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

- Seton Hall finished with 32 team kills, while Marquette had 49.
- The Pirates totaled 49 team digs, while Marquette had 48.
- Thelen has led the Pirates in kills in all 14 matches so far this season.
- Coffey notched her seventh double-double of the season and the team-leading 24th of her career.
- Coffey played in her 75th consecutive match, which leads all active Pirates.
- Seton Hall falls to 1-5 in three-set matches this season.
- The Pirates fall to 5-14 all-time against Marquette.
