North Haven, Conn. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team surrendered the doubles point on Saturday evening, but its outstanding depth displayed wins at the top four singles spots as the Pirates earned their third consecutive win with a 5-2 victory at Quinnipiac.
Sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) began the evening with a 6-2 win over Rachel Horton and Sydney Young, 6-2, in the No. 1 doubles spot. However, the Bobcats responded with 6-4 wins in the No. 2 and 3 matchups to earn the doubles point.
Freshman Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) earned the first singles point for the Pirates with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory over Horton in the No. 2 spot. Kim picked up a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
In the No. 1 singles position, Kagwa trailed 5-0 in the opening set, but rallied off an incredible 12 consecutive games en route to a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Freshman Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) clinched the team win with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph in the No. 6 singles spot over Proyfon Lohaphaisan, while freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) collected a 6-2, 6-3 win against Layla Rodriguez.
"I am thrilled to see the depth of our roster contributing on a match-by-match basis," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Everyone has stepped up to the plate and taken care of business when called upon, and that was a key factor in tonight's win."
Looking ahead, the Pirates will take on a pair of local foes next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 17 SHU is at NJIT for a 6 p.m. match in Newark before heading to Rutgers for a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday.
