Pirates Down Binghamton for First Win of Spring

WEST POINT, N.Y. - A sweep of the top three singles positions coupled with two doubles wins helped the SetonHall tennis team score its first victory of the spring as the Pirates downed Binghamton, 5-2, Sunday at West Point.
The Hall (1-1) claimed four singles points overall and closed the opening weekend with a cumulative singles record of 7-5 - including a 4-0 mark between No. 1 and No. 2 - after recording three wins Saturday. against Army.
Sophomore Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and senior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) were responsible for the stellar play at the top of the lineup all weekend; combining for two first doubles victories to go along with a pair of triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.
Strike has assumed the first spot in the lineup and responded by closing the opening weekend with four-straight set victories. After rallying past Rugile Valiunaite of Army on Saturday, the sophomore dropped just a single game in a convincing win over Annie DiMuro.
Liljekvist was equally impressive at No. 2, coming up with crucial points to notch her second straight-set win in as many appearances and get past Sara Kohtz, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Senior Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) also wrapped up the first weekend of the dual match slate without a loss as she topped Alexis Tashiro by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (1) in sixth singles competition, Keenan previously tallied a win over Nan Porter of the Black Knights at No. 5 and is now just one shy of her season win total between the No. 5 and No. 6 spots from last year.
A milestone victory from freshman Anicka Fajnarova (Bratislava, Slovakia) rounded out a quartet of successful singles outings for The Hall as the newcomer earned the first spring dual match win of her career by emerging from a back-and-forth third singles showdown with Agatha Ambrozy with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 result.
The stellar singles effort helped seal the teamn win as SHU also picked up a point by coming out on top in two of three doubles matches. Liljekvist and Strike moved to 2-0 on the young season at No. 1 by battling their way to a tiebreak victory of Brodsky and Tashiro, 7-6 (8-6).
Senior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) and sophomore Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) posted an identical score against DiMuro and Kohtz in the third position to tip the doubles point in favor of the Pirates.
The Hall will be in action on back-to-back days again next weekend, first traveling to take on NJIT on Friday, February 5 before visiting Fairfield the following day. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
