MORRISTOWN, N.J. -
For the second time in as many days, the Seton Hall tennis team took what proved to be the match-deciding doubles point as the Pirates edged Binghamton, 4-3, for their second straight victory.
With two of the top three singles position players out for the team, the Pirates had to fight through adversity to earn their third win of the spring.
While the duo of senior Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Germany) and junior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) was unable to notch a win in doubles, the two were able to claim two of the Pirates' three singles points.
Freshman Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and senior captain Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) earned their fourth win in five outings, rolling through the Bearcats' tandem of Agatha Ambrozy and Katherine Medianik, 8-3, setting up a winner-take-all match for the doubles point.
Juniors Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) and Julia Keenan (Greeland, N.H.) stepped up a in a big way, earning their third dual match victory as a pair this spring with an 8-4 triumph over Binghamton's Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro.
While Kim and Keenan fell in straight sets to the Bearcats at the #2 and #3 singles positions, the Pirates bounced back behind the play of Klingert. The transfer from Gonzaga has made an immediate impact for Greg Wyzykowski's program. After being down 4-1 in the first set, Klingert rallied and controlled her match, downing Brodsky (6-4, 6-3). After winning the C Flight Singles Title at the NJIT Invitational earlier this season, Klingert has climbed up from the #6 position and has been able to win at the #4 position, solidifying herself as quite a force for The Hall.
The Pirates were able to even the match with Shoemaker rallying from an early deficit. After dropping the first set to Ambrozy, the captain rallied to take sets two and three, 6-2 and 6-3 respectively.
Liljekvist, who is this week's Big East Player of the Week, was in a battle in the #1 singles position for SHU. After dropping the first set to Tashiro, 7-6, Liljekvist was able to battle back with a 6-2 victory in set two. But, it was Tashiro who gave Binghamton the go-ahead point in singles action with the 6-3 victory in the third.
That left it up to Guryanova to lock up the team victory, and the senior jumped out to a strong start. Guryanova dropped Olga Ostrovetsky in the first set, 6-1, and rallied from behind to take the second, 7-5, giving SHU the point to leave the two teams tied in singles action.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, March 7, in their BIG EAST opener against the Georgetown Hoyas. Action will begin at Center Court in Morristown at 5 p.m. Follow @SHU_Tennis on twitter for updates.
