After scoring straight-set wins in the opening round to move into the quarterfinals, both Kim and Quevedo earned a spot in the final four by emerging victorious from a three-set marathon. Kim dropped the first set to freshman Emma Burgess of BIG EAST rival Providence, 2-6, but rallied back to take the next frame, 6-4. In the tiebreak, the Honolulu native overpowered Burgess to take a 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 victory.
Quevedo's quarterfinal draw resulted in a matchup with another Lone Star State product in Army's Allyson Hayley. Quevedo jumped out to a one set lead after a tightly-contested first frame but dropped the second, 2-6. With the semifinal spot on the line, it was Quevedo who ousted Hayley with a 10-4 victory.
Riding the momentum of the win over Hayley, Quevedo cruised into the title match with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Summer Walker of Connecticut - securing a third-straight win to start her career.
Kim also moved into the final after Sitilia Rencheli of host Quinnipiac - a Virginia Commonwealth transfer - retired with the Seton Hall freshman holding a 5-4 advantage in the first set.
In the all-Pirate championship, Quevedo claimed four of the first five games to jump out to a 4-1 edge but was also forced to retire four games later with Kim again ahead, 5-4.
The dominant showing in the B flight for The Hall's pair of newcomers represented just a portion of the team's success on the opening weekend.
In the C flight, junior Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) followed a first round win with an emphatic performance against the Friars' Katherine DeNucci, dropping only four games in a straight-set victory to advance to the semifinals at Quinnipiac for the third consecutive fall.
Junior transfer Isabell Klingert (Baden-Wurrtemburg, Germany) also came within one match of a championship appearance in her first competition for The Hall, losing a total of six games againt Nicole Kelik of Quinnipiac and Connecticut's Jenise Vargas en route to the semifinals. Klingert's run was eventually halted by Providence senior Karen Ramirez in a 3-6, 2-6 decision.
Seton Hall also registered a semifinal appearancxe in the top doubles flight as Keenan and classmate Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) combined to take eight of nine games from the UConn pair of Walker and Srna Stosljevic before eliminating Burgess and her Providene teammate Alana Prinos in a tiebreak. The win advanced Keenan and Liljekvist into the semis where they would come up short against the All-MAAC First Team pair of Sophia Dzulynsky and Sydney Young (Quinnipiac).
"We needed good competitive matches this weekend and for the most part it is what we received," said head coach Greg Wyzykowski looking back at the three-day tournament. "The match schedule was tight from day-to-day resulting in some adverse conditions. Our team respondeed well which is a testament to their character. We showed a lot of potential this weekend and as we get more practice time, I believe our execution will as well, leading to stronger results."
The Pirates will return to action in two weeks when they travel to the West Point Invitational. The three-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 26 and carry through Sunday, September 28.
