NEWARK, DEL. - Freshman Christiana Rutkowski (Middletown, N.J.) recorded the third consecutive team-leading performance to start her career on Saturday, guiding the Seton Hall women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the 6K Delaware Invitational on Saturday.
Rutkowski turned in a time of 23:26.70 in her first outing at the 6K distance, claiming fourth-place out of 150 collegiate female competitors. The Middletown product has now paced the Pirates with a fourth-place effort in all three outings to this point in the fall, including a team victory last week at the St. John's/Hofstra Fall Festival.
In each of the first two of those efforts Rutkowski finished directly ahead of senior Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) for The Hall but in Migton's absence at Delaware it was fellow newcomer and Garden State native Emily Johnson (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) who stepped up to produce a time of 24:21.29 and collect the first top-10 finish of her young career.
Johnson had ranked sixth on the squad in each of the first two meets before making the jump up the team rankings on Saturday and is the first Pirate other than Rutkowski, Migton, Desyre Blackburn (Aloha, Ore.), Amanda Quaglia (Reading, Pa.) and Bailey Seach (Winston Salem, N.C.) to record a scoring time this season.
The junior Quaglia came in just two spots after Johnson, securing 12th-place overall with a time of 24:32.73 and matching a season-best by placing third among 14 Pirates.
Narrowly missing the fifth top-15 finish of her career was Blackburn who took 16th-place points on the strength of a final mark of 24:42.69. Blackburn has now scored in all 12 meets during her time in a Seton Hall uniform while Seach extended her scoring streak to three by placing 22nd among Division I competitors with a time of 25:31.01.
Junior Bri Miller (Bayonne, N.J.) nearly contributed her first scoring time of the year, clocking in at 26:38.15 to rank a season-best sixth on the squad. Freshman Emily Curran (Wakefield, Mass.) turned in a time of 26:39.87 to finish seventh among Seton Hall runners for the second time in three career appearances.
Overall, the Pirates finished with a team score of 59 while hosts Delaware claimed the title with a score of 25.
Both Seton Hall squads will receive a week off from competition before heading to the Asics-Embry Riddle Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Saturday, September 27.
