LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Over the weekend, senior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) once again delivered the performance of the day for the Seton Hall cross country program at the Rider Invitational; picking up her fourth victory in four spring meets by turning in the fastest 800-meter time in a field that included 53 female competitors.
As the Pirates continue their spring slate by competing in selected events on the track, it has been Eddings who has emerged as the star of what has been a stellar showing for the program overall. At Rider, the Chicago native reached the 800m finish in at 2:13.82 - her fastest time of 2014 to date.
Previously, Eddings claimed the top spot in the 800-meter at both the Stockton and Muhlenberg Invitationals, victories which sandwiched a third-place showing in a 60-runner field at the Monmouth Spring Opener. A veteran and team captain who led The Hall in eight of nine cross country meets in the fall; she also has a 1,500-meter victory at Stockton to her credit.
Junior Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.), a fellow team captain who paced the Pirates with a medal-winning performance at the ECAC Championships in the fall finale, added another top-15 finisher for SHU in the event after clocking in with a time of 2:20.77 (13th).
Eddings and Migton also served as the back-half of a 4x800-meter relay squad that took second out of 11 teams with a time of 9:33.17; besting squads from Fairfield, NJIT, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, Saint Peter's and hosts Rider in the process. Freshmen Holli Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) and Desyre Blackburn (Aloha, Ore.) carried the first two legs of the runner-up effort.
Blackburn also placed just outside the top-25 of a deep 1,500-meter field with a time of 5:04.88 (26th) while junior Allyson Guieb (Robbinsville, N.J.) recorded a 10th-place mark of 1:10.92 in 400-meter hurdles competition.
On the men's side, junior Kevin Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) was once again the team's top distance finisher, cracking the top-15 of the 5,000-meter field by reaching the line in 16:10.12. Freshman Sean Kip (Union, N.J.) crossed just three runners later at the 16:21.30 mark while John Walsh (Deltaville, Va.) scored a 22nd-place effort (16:30.38) to rank among The Hall's top-three finishers in the event.
Freshmen Victor Ricci (Narragansett, R.I.) and Cameron Quisenberry (Owensboro, Ky.) paced the squad in the 1,500-meter race, finishing 26th and 30th respectively.
Both the men's and women's cross country squads will close out the spring slate this Saturday, April 19 at the All-American Meet hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
