ATHENS, GA. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team's potent offense was disrupted by a lengthy and athletic Georgia squad as the Pirates could not sustain enough points to keep up in a 65-47 defeat, Sunday evening at Stegeman Coliseum. Senior Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) and freshmen Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored eight points each to lead the Pirates.
Seton Hall fell to 9-2 on the season, and the Bulldogs, coming off a two-week layoff between games, improved to 6-3. The Pirates finished their southern trip 1-1, generating a 20-point win at South Florida just three days ago. The normally efficient-shooting Pirates were held to just 29.6 percent shooting from the floor and just 3-for-20 from the three-point line. They had come into the game shooting 47 percent overall and 41.7 percent from three-point range.
Georgia came out of the gates hot with three-pointers, nailing three in the game's first four minutes, and the Bulldogs took advantage of some sloppy Pirates play to build a 22-7 advantage before the first half reached its midway point.
The Pirates had a nice sequence, scoring seven straight points on redshirt freshman Rashed Anthony's (Orangeburg, S.C.) hook shot, Mobley's three-pointer from the wing and a nice Rodriguez lay-in underneath to get the deficit to nine, 27-18, but the Bulldogs answered back with an 8-0 run. Then to close the half Georgia kept drawing Pirates fouls to get to the line and score unguarded points while the Pirates got into major foul trouble. The Bulldogs ended with a 14-4 run and went into halftime leading 41-22. Seton Hall was called for 14 fouls that led to 19 first-half Bulldogs free throw attempts.
The second half did not get much better for the Pirates, who continued to struggle with Georgia's length. Every shot underneath was contested, and the Bulldogs finished with eight blocks on the night.
Seton Hall returns to the court after Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 27 against Maine at historic Walsh Gymnasium. The game will tip off at noon, and it will air nationally on FOX Sports 1. Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will also have the radio call on 970 AM.
Conference action will start on Dec. 31 as Seton Hall hosts St. John's at Prudential Center at noon. The game between the Pirates and Red Storm is part of the BIG EAST and FOX Sports New Year's Eve Tip-Off Marathon. From noon until midnight, the BIG EAST Conference will ring in the New Year with the opening day of league play airing live on FOX Sports 1.
