Seton Hall (23-6, 11-3) tallied 38 kills with just the aforementioned four attack errors for a .370 attack percentage for the match. Meanwhile, the Pirates' defense, one of the top units in the nation, held the Wildcats to just .055 and forced 23 attack errors.
Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) registered her 13th double-double of the season with a match-high 29 assists to go with 13 digs.
With the score tied at four in the first set, Seton Hall scored five straight, and a kill by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave The Hall a 9-4 lead. The Pirates remained in control for the remainder of the set as the lead grew to as many as 10 points when Shelbey Manthorpe's kill put them in set point, 24-14. Another kill by Hansen ended the set in Seton Hall's favor, 25-16. The Hall connected on a .312 attack percentage in set one, compared to just .108 for Villanova.
After Villanova scored the first two points of set two, Seton Hall scored four straight to take an early 4-2 advantage. Lauren Carpenter cut the Seton Hall lead to 4-3, but the Pirates responded with a 12-1 run to take a commanding 16-4 lead. A kill by Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) extended the Pirates' advantage to 22-6, and the rout was on. Dani Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) provided the exclamation point on a 25-8 drubbing of Villanova in set two. The staunch Pirates' defense held the Wildcats to a minus attack percentage in the second frame, while committing just one attack error themselves.
Seton Hall (23-6, 11-3) went for the jugular in set three, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Villanova never led in the third stanza as the Pirates recorded an impressive .440 attack percentage. With The Hall ahead, 22-15, Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) took over. The junior registered consecutive kills to put the Pirates in match point, and her subsequent block gave Seton Hall a 25-15 set three victory and match sweep.
Grammer finished the night as the team leader with nine kills. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had eight kills and eight digs.
With the victory, Seton Hall's magic number to clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament is one. If Seton Hall wins one more match, or Xavier loses one more match, the Pirates will play post-season volleyball for the first time since 2011.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Nov. 14 when it hosts defending BIG EAST champion Marquette at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
