PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Following a dominant day one at a BIG EAST tri-meet hosted by Rutgers on Friday, the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team left no doubt in finishing the job on Saturday, completing a sweep of league rivals Georgetown and Villanova.
After posting seven event victories on the first day, The Hall added six more this afternoon to down the Hoyas (222-131) and Wildcats (245-102) while improving to 7-1 overall this fall. The Pirates' impressive dual meet record also now includes a 3-0 mark against BIG EAST teams after SHU routed Providence last weekend.
Georgetown was one of two squads to finish ahead of The Hall at the 2014 BIG EAST Championships, finishing as the runner-up to defending champions Xavier.
The Pirates picked up right where the left off when the morning session began as the 200-medley relay team of Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Sean Sali (Bridgewater, N.J.), Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) claimed top honors in the event with a time of 1:34.92, holding off Villanova's top squad by .35 seconds.
A winner in two events on Friday in Piscataway, Seton Hall freshman Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) kept his, and the Pirates' momentum rolling by delivering a victorious 400-IM time of 4:07.48 to lead three SHU representatives in the top-five of the event. Fellow newcomer Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) clocked in at 4:16.95 to take fourth, less than two seconds ahead of sophomore Ian Campbell (Corvallis, Ore.) in fifth (4:18.66).
Yanchulis later tallied his fourth individual victory of the weekend with a 500-free mark of 4:44.23, edging the Hoyas' Daniel Ross. Wimmer added a third-place showing in the event, clocking in at 4:45.61.
The Hall's most emphatic performance of the day in the pool came in the 200-back where freshman Zohar Suslovich (Holon, Israel) swam his way into the top spot (1:54.41), leading the team's sweep of the top-three positions. Fellow newcomer Michael Mattera (Deer Park, N.Y.) ranked second with a 1:56.65 mark that was fractions of a second ahead of Carlino in third (1:56.72).
In a scene that mirrored the one following the 100-breast event on Friday, the duo of Sali and classmate Collin Dunn (Litchfield, Conn.) earned the right to celebrate a 1-2 finish in the 200-breast. Sali eclipsed all other entrants and clocked in at 2:11.16 while Dunn was close behind with a time of 2:11.42.
In both the 100-free and 100-fly, the Pirates earned three of the top-five times to boost their lead on the team scoreboard. Sophomore Cooper Lindsley (Lancaster, Pa.) and Bosse finished in a dead heat for third at 48.16 in freestyle competition and were followed to the finish by freshman Jason Tan (Bridgewater, N.J.) (48.23).
DeLillo paced the blue & white in the 100-fly (52.30) with freshman Matt Zebrowski (Sayreville, N.J.) (52.36) and Carlino (52.78) occupying the next two spots.
To wrap up competition in the pool and seal the pair of impressive victories, Carlino teamed with Bosse Tan and Yanchulis to place third in the 400-free relay with a combined time of 3:12.66.
From the diving board, senior Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) continued his unbeaten run from three-meters, logging a six-dive score of 343.35 that was more than 75 points ahead of runner-up Jared Cooper-Vespa (Georgetown).
The Hall will head to Virginia next for the Patriot Invitational, a three-day event hosted by George Mason. Competition is scheduled to start on Thursday, November 20 and will carry through Saturday, November 22.
