
Volleyball Sweeps Butler for Eighth Straight Win

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - BothShelbey andStacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team won its eighth straight match with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) victory at Butler on Friday.
The win improves Seton Hall to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in BIG EAST Conference play. It's the first time since 1994 that the Pirates have won their first four conference matches.
Shelbey Manthorpe tallied a match-high 33 assists and tied her season-high with 21 digs. Her sister Stacey tallied a team-best 12 kills to go with 15 digs.
Butler (9-6, 1-2) grabbed an early 5-3 lead in set one, but the Pirates responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. The Bulldogs would close the deficit to just two points six times throughout the rest of the set, but couldn't get closer. With Seton Hall clinging to a 23-21 lead, Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the Pirates in set point and a kill by Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) ended the set in their favor, 25-21. The Seton Hall defense held the Bulldogs to just a .069 attack percentage in the opening set victory.
Sekulova finished the match with 10 kills as did teammate Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.).
Seton Hall kept applying the pressure to start the second set. The Pirates scored five of the first six points. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe extended The Hall's lead to 10-3 and prompted a Butler timeout. Out of the timeout, the Pirates scored the next two points to take a commanding 12-3 advantage, their largest of the set. Butler cut the lead to two points, 18-16, but Seton Hall responded with three straight points to give it some breathing distance, 21-16. The Bulldogs never led in set two as the Pirates powered to a 25-21 set two win to take a commanding two set advantage in the match.
Set three was significantly closer than the prior two. With the score tied at 18, a pair of kills by Stacey Manthorpe gave the Pirates a 20-18 lead and prompted a Butler timeout. The Bulldogs never led again. With the Seton Hall leading, 23-22, Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) drove home a kill to put the Pirates in set point and the following kill by Shelbey Manthorpe won set three, 25-22, and completed the three-set sweep.
The win is the first for Seton Hall in the brief history of the rivalry.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it remains on the road to face BIG EAST rival Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
