After winning eight straight matches to begin BIG EAST play, the Pirates have now dropped their last three.
Butler (16-7, 8-3) gets its revenge after Seton Hall went to Indianapolis on Oct. 3 and swept the Bulldogs on their home court.
Manthorpe finished with a team-high 36 assists to go with 10 digs and five kills. Her sister Stacey Manthrorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a match-high 15 kills to go with seven digs.
Seton Hall (19-6, 8-3) got off to a much better start tonight than it did vs. Xavier on Friday. The Pirates scored six of the first eight points of set one. The Hall maintained a slim lead for much of the early goings, but Butler scored three straight points to take their first lead of the set, 17-16. Seton Hall rallied to take a 21-20 lead, but the Bulldogs scored three straight to take a 23-21 advantage. The Pirates staved off one set point, but eventually fell in set one, 25-23. As was the issue yesterday, the Pirates' bugaboo in set one was their defense. Seton Hall allowed an attack percentage of .302 by Butler in the opening frame. Despite the loss, Stacey Manthorpe led all players with six kills in set one.
The Pirates started quickly in set two, but it didn't take long for Butler to catch up. 10-7 A kill by Butler's Stephanie Kranda broke a 7-7 tie. Butler proceeded to run off seven straight points to take a commanding 14-7 advantage. From there, the lead only grew. A block of a Stacey Manthorpe attack extended the Bulldog lead to 23-12, and Butler cruised to a 25-14 set two victory. The Bulldog offense was masterful in set two. Butler connected for 19 kills and just two attack errors for an attack percentage of .708.
Butler scored seven of the first nine points in set three. Trailing 10-5, Seton Hall cut the Bulldogs' lead to just one point at 11-10, but Butler again pulled away with five of the next six points. The Pirates used a 6-2 run to again cut the Bulldog deficit to one, 18-17. A Butler attack error finally got Seton Hall even at 20-20. But Butler responded with four straight points to enter match point, 24-20. The Hall staved off three match points, but ultimately fell, 25-23, to lose the match in straight sets.
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 when it hosts LIU-Brooklyn at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
