NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Seton Hall tennis team completed singles competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA/United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday as consolation matches were held in conjunction with continued play in the main draw.
On Saturday, both Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) and Luize Liva Strike (Riga, Latvia) scored main draw singles victories, advancing to the round of 64 in impressive fashion.
Liljekvist took the first set from Quinnipiac's Jacqueline Raynor, 6-4, but Raynor came back to capture the second in a tiebreak. In the decisive set, the Seton Hall junior dominated the course of play dropping only one game to earn the right to move on to play Lexi Borr of Boston College.
Against Borr, Liljekvist fell in straight sets and was eliminated from the main draw but coming off a spring in which she earned All-BIG EAST honors, the Saint Mary's transfer finished the tournament portion of the fall schedule as one of the team leaders in individual victories.
Strike needed just two sets to get past Aarzoo Malik of UMass in the first round, cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 win. Pennsylvania sophomore Kana Daniel presented a tougher challenge in the next round but the Pirates' standout newcomer rallied from a one set deficit to claim the second, 6-4. Daniel would eventually prevail however, posting a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 triumph.
On Sunday, junior Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) - who came within one victory of giving The Hall three entrants in the main draw - registered her second singles win of the weekend with a tightly contested 6-4, 4-6 10-8 result over Fairfield's Sarah Stuhlman. Following a walk over in the next round, Keenan went up against Margarita Kotok of Buffalo but dropped a 5-7, 2-6 decision.
Freshman Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) was also in action in consolation singles after teaming with Strike in main draw doubles play earlier in the weekend but was bested by Ana Glumac of Albany (3-6, 1-6).
The Pirates will wrap up the fall season with their first dual match of 2014-15 when they head to Fordham next Saturday, October 25.
