Each year, the ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship is presented to a “Division I women’s player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team’s performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.”
The award dates back to 1997 and is named in honor of the memory of venerable former Pennsylvania women’s tennis coach, Cissie Leary.
It is the first regional award for Sher, who also picked up her second All-BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Team honor in as many years after a dominant 2013. The Hong Kong native led the Pirates in wins for the third consecutive season while playing exclusively in the top singles position. She suffered just a single loss in 10 matches against conference opponents in 2012-13 and will enter her senior season having won 17 of her last 19 BIG EAST matches. Already one of the most prolific players in program history, Sher ranks fourth all-time at The Hall with 61 career wins and is the only Pirate on record with three separate 20-win seasons to her credit.
Aside for her statistical success, the way Chloe approaches the game and conducts herself on and off the court has garnered respect from her teammates and opponents alike, and most of all her coach.
“Chloe is a true model of a student-athlete,” said head coach Greg Wyzykowski. “She has been successful in the classroom and on the tennis court. Since her freshman year, she has represented our team at first singles, first doubles, and was our ITA representative each year. It has been my pleasure to coach Chloe and have her represent Seton Hall.”
As the Northeast selection, Sher will now compete against the award winners from the 11 other regions across the country for a chance to be named the national winner of the 2013 Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.
