WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The Seton Hall cross country program traveled to Williamsburg over the weekend, continuing its spring schedule with a trip to the Colonial Relays.
At the meet hosted by the College of William and Mary, the Pirates had a presence in 10 total events over the two-day meet.
Junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) turned in a strong showing in the 800-meter race, finishing 23rd out of 67 competitors with a time of 2:15.56. As a part of her effort, Eddings bested runners representing teams from conferences ranging from the Atlantic-10 to the ACC and the BIG EAST.
Sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) placed 43rd in the event with a time of 2:21.08.
Eddings and Migton also teamed with freshman Alex Ryan (Aurora, Colo.) and senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) to finish 10th among 21 teams in the 4x800 meter relay, combining for a time of 9:22.01.
The same quartet also produced The Hall’s best 4x400 time on the women’s side, finishing in 4:05.16.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Allyson Guieb (Robbinsville, N.J.) clocked in with a final time of 1:15.14 and freshman Amanda Catherall (Farmingville, N.Y.) completed the 5,000-meter race in 22:03.17.
Catherall also competed on the Pirates’ 4x1,500 squad along with senior Christina Chafos (South Amboy, N.J.), Kristen May (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Louisa Ozimek (Strongsville, Ohio). Together, they combined to best their seed time by almost two minutes as they completed the race in 22:21.93.
In the men’s 5K, senior Cory Hellwig (Vernon, N.J.) crossed the line in 16:40.21, one place ahead of freshman Joseph Martinelli (Branchburg, N.J.).
In the longest distance race of the meet, the Pirates were paced by a steady 10K performance from Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) as the freshman picked up a 22nd place finish with a 32:46.58 mark. Flannery’s final time was nearly 1:15 under his seed time entering the race, the second-largest difference among the 29-man field.
Flannery was also a part of SHU’s efforts in the 4x800 and 4x1,500 relays. In the 4x800, the Forked River native ran the first leg for a squad that included classmate Jacob Bast (St. Louis, Mo.), Hellwig and junior Carl Johnston (Surrey. British Columbia) and went on to post a time of 8:34.82.
Bast, Flannery and Johnston joined forces again in the 4x1,500, this time accompanied in the lineup by sophomore Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.). With Flannery as the lead again and Orner as the anchor, the team turned in a time of 18:04.21.
The SHU cross country teams will be back in action this weekend, when they travel locally to take part in the Rider Invitational in Lawrenceville, N.J. The meet will be held on Saturday, April 13 but a start time has yet to be determined.
