PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After making Seton Hall history in 2012 by becoming the first Pirate to receive all-conference honors, the league office announced on Thursday that junior Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) was named to the All-BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Team for a second consecutive year.
One of only 12 players in the league to receive the distinction, Sher continued to tear through the school record book in her third season at The Hall, putting together a body of work that firmly placed her name among the conference’s elite.
She began the fall by defeating three consecutive conference opponents on her way to capturing the A Flight championship at the Quinnipiac Invitational. She went on to reach the A Flight finals in two more tournaments (Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational, Cornell Invitational) and made a third-consecutive appearance in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Tournament.
In dual match play, Sher was SHU’s unquestioned leader from the top spot in the lineup, amassing a 12-6 record in head-to-head competition that included victories in both of her appearances against opponents ranked regionally or nationally. The Hong Kong native also closed the year with five-straight wins in BIG EAST play, a stretch that was highlighted by a two-set dismantling of Nevena Selakovic (St. John’s), a unanimous All-BIG EAST selection.
At the end of the regular season, Sher boasted a gaudy 90 percent win rate (9-1) against conference foes in all competitions, with her only loss coming in three sets on the road against Syracuse’s Amanda Rodgers, another unanimous all-conference honoree. Dating back to 2012, she has triumphed in 17 of her last 19 conference matchups.
With 21 total victories on the year, Sher became the first player to post three 20-win seasons in a Seton Hall uniform and she currently sits third on the school’s all-time wins list with 61 to her credit through three years.
She also combined with partner Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) to build an equally impressive résumé on the doubles court. The two juniors entered the season as the winningest pair in the program’s 39-year history and proceeded to add to their collection of accolades by posting 18 more victories and picking up the A Flight title at the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational. A key component of the team’s success, Sher and Portela prevailed in eight of their first nine spring matches, and scored a victory in each one of the Pirates’ dual match wins.
Notre Dame’s Brittney Sanders was tabbed as Player of the Year while Matea Cutura of DePaul was selected as Freshman of the Year. ND coach Jay Louderback took home Coach of the Year honors.
