LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Seton Hall cross country program traveled south to run in the Rider Invitational on Saturday and delivered its best performance of the spring, returning home with first-place finishes in three of the nine events the team competed in.
All three of the Pirates’ victories came at the 800-meter distance as SHU claimed both the men’s and women’s 800-meter races and also topped the field in the women’s 4x800 relay.
Seton Hall thoroughly dominated the women’s 800-meter individual competition, accounting for the three best times of the day. Senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) paced the field of 35 competitors with a first-place time of 2:12.03. No stranger to seeing her name atop the final results, Rolle was victorious at the 5K Hofstra Brick Stone Run in the fall, becoming the first Seton Hall athlete to win an event since the program transitioned to its current incarnation prior to the 2010-11 season.
After registering the team’s top 800-meter performance at last week’s Colonial Relays, junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) followed Rolle to the line at Rider, striding her way to a second-place effort with a final mark of 2:16.99. Eddings narrowly beat teammate Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) to the finish as Migton crossed less than .5 seconds later with the third-best time of the day (2:17.34).
The same trio was later featured on the 4x800 relay squad for The Hall and combined with freshman Alex Ryan (Aurora, Colo.) to again comfortably score first-place points. Ryan, Migton, Eddings and Rolle posted a collective time of 9:34.87, finishing nearly seven seconds ahead of the home squad from Rider and almost 15 seconds in front of a third-place team from Sacred Heart.
Not to be outdone, senior Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) picked up a first-place finish in the men’s 800-meter competition out-pacing 47 other runners with a time of 1:53.52. Junior Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) turned in a time of 1:59.69, good enough for 11th overall in the final event rankings.
In other action, sophomore Allyson Guieb (Robbinsville, N.J.) added a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, recording her best time of the spring (1:12.96).
Kristen May (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led a group of five consecutive Seton Hall runners across the line in the women’s 5K with a 20:42.93 effort while sophomore Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) led the way for SHU in the men’s 5K by finishing in 16:23.08.
The Pirates will wrap up their spring schedule next week when they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pa. for ESU’s All-American Meet. Competition is scheduled to take place throughout the day on Saturday, April 20.
