FAIRFAX, VA. - Junior James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) swam his way to a championship final spot to finish as the top performer for the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team on the third and final day of the 2013 Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
Logan narrowly missed out on a shot to swim for the 100-breast title on Friday and after posting a victory in the consolation final, came back on Saturday and recorded the seventh-fastest time during 200-breast preliminary competition. In the nightcap, Logan registered a time of 2:07.75; placing seventh overall and improving upon his previous BIG EAST-leading time by nearly five seconds.
Senior Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) vaulted up to among the top-four in the conference with a C final time of 2:13.96 while classmate Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) finished 24th.
Logan was also a key part of the Pirates' top overall finish of the day as he joined with freshmen Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Jack Poupore (Tucson, Ariz.) as well as sophomore Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) to collect a fifth-place finish in the 400-free relay, turning in a time of 3:09.38 that is the second-fastest in the BIG EAST this season.
Bosse led the way for SHU in the 100-free while Carlino recorded the squad's best finish in the 200-back as each was part of a pair of Pirates to advance to the C final. Bosse finished 22nd (48.50) in the freestyle event and was followed by freshman Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) in 24th while Carlino placed 19th (1:56.97) in the 100-back, four spots ahead of classmate Matt Labombard (Westfield, Mass.).
Junior Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) followed up his championship final appearance in the 100-fly with a ninth-place finish in the 200-fly prelims on Saturday. DeLillo returned in the second session to emerge as the victor in the consolation final, reaching the wall in 1:56.18.
In all, the 200-fly was the strongest event of the day for The Hall as a total of four Pirates placed among the top-20. Seniors Tyler Naumann (Middletown, Conn.) and Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) finished back-to-back in 14th and 15th-place respectively while DeLisio came in 20th.
Senior Jon Ropson (McKinney, Texas) scored 13th-place points in the 1,650-free, finishing the long distance race in 16:50.23.
With a team total of 329 points, Seton Hall finished the event in fifth place. Hosts George MAson were victorious with a three-day total of 963.
The Seton Hall swimming & diving program will be off from competition until January 25, 2014 when they will travel to Marist for a dual meet. The team's training efforts during that time will feature a seven-day trip to Ponce, Puerto Rico from January 1-January 8.
